AT90CAN64 是一種基于AVR增強型RISC結構的低功耗CMOS 8-位單片機。通過執行以一個單時鐘周期的高效指令，AT90CAN64每MHz能達1MIPS，這就可讓系統設計人員將功率損耗與處理速度優化。AVR內核具有豐富的指令集并帶有32個通用目的工作寄存器。32個寄存器全都直接連到運算邏輯單元(ALU)，允許兩個獨立的寄存器以在一個時鐘周期執行單個指令的方式訪問。其結果就是，采用這種結構在速度比常規的RISC單片機快10倍的同時代碼效率更高。
AT90CAN64 是采用Atmel高密度非易失存儲器技術制造的，其在片ISP Flash允許程序存儲器通過一個常規的非易失存儲器編程器或一個運行在AVR核上的在片引導程序，經一個SPI串口在系統重新編程。引導程序能夠采用任何接口將應用程序下載到Flash存儲器中。在應用Flash區更新時，在引導Flash區中的軟件將繼續運行，提供真正的讀-寫操作。通過將8-位RISC CPU與在系統自編程Flash融合在一個單芯片上，AT90CAN64便成為一個高效的單片機，可以為很多嵌入式控制應用提供一種極為靈活且成本有效的解決方案。
AT90CAN64 AVR可由成套的程序和系統開發工具支持，包括：仿真調試器(JTAG ICE mkII + AVR Studio)、C編譯器(GCC Win AVR或IAR EWA AVR)、開發板(DVK90CAN1)等。
